United Airlines CEO’s Straight Talk on Sustainability Irks Competitors

UA's CEO Kirby seems to be one man who is used to straight talking most of this life:

  • United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby has committed to making the airline 100% green by 2050 without relying on traditional carbon offsets.

  • He criticized battery-powered aircraft and tree planting as unsustainable solutions for long-haul flights, stating that carbon sequestration and sustainable jet fuel are more feasible options and also added that sustainable jet fuel will become cost competitive but not on day one which almost doesn’t exist today.

  • Kirby also called for political support to address the climate crisis and criticized the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration for not eliminating "zig-zag" flight routes.

  • He also acknowledged  that United has invested in zero-emission aircraft engine technology, and the only plausible use would involve short-haul routes.
